Hi! I’m Rachel and I have a recently-rediscovered passion for sewing.
Hi! My name is Rachel and a year ago I made a dress, this dress to be precise:
Let me introduce you to Hazel from Victory Patterns, my first sewing project in seven years and the first which does not involve Textile Art. Hazel forms part of a 2013 New Year’s Resolution to take up dressmaking and I am pretty happy with the results. Sure the top is little on the see through side (the lining starts as the same point as the lighter purple) and the neckline isn’t the neatest piece of stitching – I did get into a bit of a mess with the collar – but the finished article is pretty cute. I am really pleased with the colour choice and my very first go at ruching, I’ve always been a fan of a ruched sleeve so be prepared to see a few more of these over the lifetime of this blog!
You can see a little more of the detailing here:
An unexpected pleasure in the process of making this dress was the purchasing of the fabric. For this dress I went to Bhopals, an Aladdin’s Cave of fabrics on Brick Lane. The shop was a complete maze with fabric piled ten feet high and with only the tiniest of walkways through the shop. Naturally, I spotted the fabric for me peeking out at the very top of these shelves and my very obliging boyfriend was sent up a slightly rickety ladder to get it down for me. The rest as we say is history.
So what happened to that New Year’s Resolution you may be asking? Well a month or so later with a new pattern picked and fabric primed I dropped my poor sewing machine on the floor and it has never been quite been the same. That all changed in May 2014 when I received the best birthday present I could have asked for – a brand new Janome Sewist 525S! I have been in love ever since and am now hopefully on my way to being a super seamstress.
You can follow that progress (and any stutters and stops in between) here on this blog so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for project number two!
